Growing up in a far-flung Alaskan fishing village, Joellen Russell was fascinated by the dynamics of sea ice. Every summer, the sea ice broke up into floes and drifted away on mysterious currents. Where, she wondered, did they go?
Today, Joellen Russell follows her curiosity to the very ends of the Earth. She heads research on the treacherous and turbulent waters around Antarctica—one of the least known environments on the planet—using floating robots, satellites, and supercomputers.
In recent years, she and her colleagues have begun to uncover the powerful role the Southern Ocean plays in Earth’s climate system. “From no perspective is there any place more important,” she recently told the New York Times. “There’s nothing like it on Planet Earth.”

Joellen Russell is an oceanographer, climate scientist, and University Distinguished Professor at the University of Arizona, where she researches the ocean’s role in climate and the carbon cycle. She currently serves as co-chair of the NOAA Science Advisory Board’s Climate Working Group and is the lead for the modeling theme of the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling project (SOCCOM). She is a founding member of Science Moms, and her work has been featured in the New Yorker, New York Times, Scientific American and on CNN.

Cocktail Recipe for the “Deep Blue Sea” (created by Joe Cacciola/Mixologist)
Ingredients: 1¼ oz Vodka, ¼ oz Blue Curaçao, 2 oz Heavy Cream, 1 oz Simple Syrup**
- Pour all ingredients into a bar shaker with ice.
- Shake well and pour mixture into a rocks glass filled with ice.
**Simple Syrup Recipe
- Mix equal parts sugar and water. Bring to a boil in a saucepan and reduce heat, then let simmer for 3 minutes and let cool to room temperature. (This mixture will last 2 weeks in the refrigerator.)
